Intro

Panama City was not just another trip for me. It was a return.

Years ago, I traveled to Panama on a mission trip with my cousin. She runs a nonprofit that protects young women from human trafficking.

The day I quit my corporate job, my cousin sent me a message about a new girl at her school who had the same name as me. I had been praying about how I could help her organization. My schedule had just opened.

So I replied:
“Let me know the dates in June. I’m coming.”

Before my week volunteering began, I stayed two nights in the historic district of Casco Viejo at the beautiful Sofitel Legend Casco Viejo.

One evening, I made a reservation for one at a restaurant called Kaandela.

Why Panama City is Great for Solo Travel

Panama City blends history, culture, and modern luxury.

The neighborhood of Casco Viejo is especially perfect for solo travelers. The streets are lined with colorful buildings, rooftop bars, and cozy restaurants.

It feels lively but also safe and welcoming.

Dining Solo at Kaandela

Kaandela is a small restaurant that celebrates the flavors of Panama.

The space felt warm and charming. At my table, there was a small card that told the story of the land and the farmers who supply the restaurant. I loved that connection to the local community.

For dinner, I ordered:

  • Tamarind pork

  • A glass of Carmenere from Chile

Every bite was full of flavor.

The Dining Experience

As I sat there enjoying dinner, I noticed something familiar.

Just like many of my solo dinners, every other table was a table for two.

But I didn’t feel alone.

Instead, I started talking with the restaurant staff. I asked them for a recommendation for a cocktail bar.

I had already planned to visit Villa Ana, a famous speakeasy nearby.

The manager smiled and said,
“That is exactly where you should go.”

Then something amazing happened.

He arranged my arrival and personally escorted me there.

A Magical Speakeasy Night

The speakeasy at Villa Ana felt like stepping back in time.

Before entering, they locked my phone inside a pouch so there were no modern distractions.

Inside the attic jazz lounge:

  • A live band played Latin music

  • Couples danced across the floor

  • The room glowed with candlelight

A table was already waiting for me.

It was one of those travel moments that feels magical; the kind that happens when you talk to locals and say yes to the unexpected.

Final Thoughts: A Celebration, Not Solitude

That night in Panama reminded me why I love solo travel.

A simple dinner turned into an unforgettable evening of music, dancing, and connection.
