My First Solo International Travel Experience

Amsterdam is a city full of canals, bikes, and history. During an international work trip to The Netherlands, three years ago, I decided to stay longer and explore Amsterdam on my own. This was my first solo international travel. It was January, and the weather was very cold. I felt a little anxious, especially after my Uber driver told me people might not be friendly to Americans.

There was even a day I stayed in my hotel and did not feel comfortable leaving. I went to the spa, ate at a Michelin-starred restaurant, and had cocktails at the rooftop bar. This is why I think choosing the right hotel is key to your trip. From my experience as a solo female traveler, I suggest picking a hotel that offers experiences within, so you can still enjoy your trip even if you don’t want to leave. When I did go out, I stayed close. That’s when I found Soho House Cecconi’s, a social place I already knew from back home in Nashville.

When my espresso martini came in the same pretty glass they use in Nashville, I felt a sense of ease. A small detail gave me comfort, even far from home.

Why Amsterdam is Great for Solo Travel

Amsterdam can feel busy, but it is also cozy and welcoming. Even in the cold, the city has warm cafes, hotel lounges, and rooftop bars where you can relax. Traveling alone here lets you find your own quiet moments. I quickly learned my Uber driver was incorrect and I found the people there to be very friendly towards me. One thing I have learned while traveling is that most people will treat you with the same amount of kindness that you show to them.

Dining Solo at Soho House Cecconi’s

Soho House Cecconi’s is an Italian restaurant filled with style and charm. For me, it felt like stepping into a place I already knew. I did not have a reservation so I sat at the bar, which reminded me of experiences I have had at the Soho House in Nashville. The menu was familiar, and so was the service. The espresso martini in that same glass reminded me of home. It made my solo dinner feel safe and special.

The Dining Experience

Cecconi’s offers pasta, pizza, and small plates with Italian flavors. The food was rich and comforting, perfect for a cold January night.

I began with Burrata, Tomato & Basil, paired with Italian red wine. For the main course, I chose Tagliatelle Bolognese, followed by Salted Caramel Profiterole with Chocolate for dessert, and finished with an Espresso Martini. Wine, pasta, dessert, and espresso martinis are my love language.

The staff was friendly and relaxed, so I didn’t feel rushed. I enjoyed eating slowly and noticing every taste. Choosing my favorite foods in this new place helped me feel comfortable while trying something different.
